Ahoy, Matey! It’s a Pirate-Themed Family Swim Night!

 

The Waterworks team would like to invite you and your family to attend our Pirate-Themed Family Swim Night at your neighborhood Waterworks Aquatics Center in Irvine, San Jose, Sierra Madre or Highlands Ranch! New Irvine Instructors

Waterworks Aquatics would like to welcome our new Irvine instructors – Sam, Omar, Trish & Andrew!

To find out more about their swimming background and experience working with children, please read below:

Sam

Sam began swimming at the age of nine and her favorite stroke is Breaststroke. Sam has worked with children of all ages and gained most of her experience babysitting and being a dance instructor. Her favorite part about teaching swimming lessons is seeing as her students improve as they come in to their lessons. She is currently attending Santa Ana College where she is studying Communication. Some of her hobbies include dancing and skateboarding.

Bilingual: Spanish

Omar

Omar began swimming at the age of thirteen and has been swimming ever since. He swam competitively all through high school and made it to CIF his junior year. His favorite stroke is Backstroke and his favorite events include the 200yd Individual Medley and the 500yd Freestyle. Omar gained most of his experience as a volunteer coach where he would help his students improve their techniques and speed. His favorite part about teaching lessons is being able to help his students improve their techniques. Omar is currently attending Fullerton College and studying Engineering. Some of his hobbies include bike riding, photography and spending time with his family.

Trish

Trish learned how to swim at the age of seven when she began taking lessons. One of her favorite strokes is Freestyle. Trish gained most of her experience working with children ages one through ten, babysitting her four younger siblings. She also would volunteer at her local church where she would work with the children conducting games and activities as well as help with bible study. Her favorite part about teaching swimming lessons is seeing her student’s growth and improvement through their lessons. Trish is currently attending Irvine Valley College where she is studying Nursing. Some of her hobbies include singing, reading, and acrylic painting.

Bilingual: Tagalog

Andrew

SEASONAL

Andrew began swimming at the age of five and has loved the water ever since. He has swum competitively since 2014 on the Brea Olinda’s Swim Team and has continued to swim with them till this day. In addition to swimming, he also plays water polo. One of his favorite strokes is Breaststroke and his favorite event is the 200yd Individual Medley. Most of his experience working with children has come from him volunteering with Club water polo, where he would teach the students how to pass, shoot and thread water. His favorite part about teaching swimming lessons is being able to work with children. Some of his hobbies include water polo and playing ping-pong.

Colleen

Colleen learned to swim when she was one year old. She swam competitively and played water polo all four years in high school. She was both varsity swim and water polo MVP as well as part of the first league water polo team, and was undefeated in Breaststroke for two years. She competed at CIF for three years and placed 9th in her division at the championship finals. Her favorite stroke is Breaststroke and her favorite events include the 100 Breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley and the 200 Freestyle relay. Colleen has gained experience with children of all ages while previously working as a deck guard here at Waterworks. Her favorite part about teaching swimming lessons is being able to see her students improve their skills while still having fun in the water. Colleen is currently attending Cal Poly Pomona where she is studying English Education. Some of her hobbies include reading and listening to music.

Henry

Henry began swimming at the age of twelve when joined his high school swim. He swam competitively all throughout high school and his favorite stroke is Breaststroke. Henry has worked with children of all ages he gained much of his experience while working as a Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Leader where he serve as a mentor to adolescents and teens. He also worked as a personal tutor creating lesson plans and study plans based on the student’s skills. His favorite part about teaching swim lessons is being able to help his students become better swimmers. Henry is currently attending University of California, Irvine where he is studying Sociology. In his free time he really enjoys working out and doing physical activities. He loves to exercise.

Braulio

Braulio began swimming at the age of eight and his favorite stroke is Butterfly. The thing he enjoys the most about teaching swimming lessons is watching his students grow and advance their swimming skills. Braulio has worked with children of all ages; as the oldest of three children he gained experience through babysitting his younger siblings. Some of Braulio’s hobbies include yoga, going to the movies and art.

Day began swimming when she was only eighteen months old and has loved the water ever since. She swam competitively for about two years with the Anaheim Aquatics Association. One of her favorite strokes is Butterfly and her favorite event is the 100 meter Butterfly. Day has been working with children of all ages through coaching an all-girls lacrosse team. She also volunteered as a camp counselor for three summers in a row. Her favorite part about teaching swimming lessons is being able to build a personal relationship with each of her students and watch them grow and develop into great swimmers. Some of Day’s hobbies include golf, working out, playing video games, and hanging out with her friends.

Celia

Celia has been a fantastic addition to Waterworks Aquatics! She started a shy individual, and has since flourished into one of our most reliable employees. She’s very friendly with all of our families, and fast friends with her coworkers. Celia has shown a true passion for helping people. She’s always doing it with a smile and is always excited to see our families walk through the front doors. She excels and stands out both on our phone team and also when she is at the front desk. Her passion and self-motivation is definitely contagious. When it comes to being approachable everyone feels comfortable coming to her for questions or just to simply have a conversation. She is always willing to do what is asked whether it comes from management or a fellow CEE and is open to feedback she receives. This kind of friendliness and approach-ability is always a fantastic trait to have!

We are excited to welcome Ali back to the Waterworks team to coach our Swim Camp! She has 6 years of experience as a competitive swimmer during which she received the Coaches Award, was named MVP, and was given the title of Team Captain. Her favorite stroke is Butterfly and her favorite event is the 200 IM. Ali previously worked with us as a Swim Instructor for 3 years teaching children of all ages and skill levels. She enjoys seeing her students learn and improve their skills in the water, and growing their passion for swimming!

Steven

Steven learned how to swim at the age of three all by himself. He became passionate about swimming in high school where he joined his school’s Water Polo team for four years and won CIF. Steven gained most of his experience working with younger children through babysitting. His favorite part about teaching swimming lessons is the one on one time he gets to spend with his students and being able to get the parents involved in the learning process. Steven is currently attending Cal State Fullerton and studying music. A fun fact about Steve is he really enjoys dancing, videogames and going to the gym.

Melina

Melina began swimming at the age of five and one her favorite strokes is Backstroke. She has worked with children of all ages by helping her churches Youth Group, leading some of her churches Mission Trips, as well as babysitting all her little nieces and nephews. Her favorite part about teaching swimming lessons is getting to spend time with all her students and being able to teach all the different swimming techniques and skills which they will be able to use through their lives. A fun fact about Melina is she really enjoys to bake and draw.

Clara

Clara began swimming at the young age of two and has enjoyed swimming ever since. She swam competitively for about nine years. She started competing at the age of seven with the South San Francisco Aquatics Club and continued till the age of fourteen. She later joined her high school swim team where she continue to compete till the age of sixteen. Clara has worked with children of all ages and gained most of her experience working with children through babysitting her younger cousins and being a swim instructor. Her favorite part about teaching is working with the children and watching them progress and accomplish their swimming goals. Clara is currently attending Orange Coast College where she is studying International Business. Some of Clara’s hobbies include going on adventures and discovering new places.

The Common Misconception of Drowning

We know when it comes to drowning this could be a bit of a tough subject to speak about.

We want to share this article with our friends and family, so you could get an idea of the correct terms used to explain when someone is drowning.

There have been a few words used in the past that have been used to describe drowning, which are incorrect and seem to scare and confuse a lot of families. The following terms for drowning are all incorrect: dry-, wet-, near-, silent-, and secondary drowning. We need to stop using these terms when talking about drowning. Not only is it in correct it also puts families in unnecessary fear.
